economy
Around 95% of the population live from agriculture and animal husbandry (especially cattle farming). Various staple foods and, as cash crops, tea and coffee (including Maraba Bourbon coffee) are grown. Several tea factories and coffee washing stations process these products. There are other industries in the southern province such as brick production, matchbox production and mineral water bottling. The craft is mainly organized through associations.
Furthermore, transport, communication and trade with neighboring countries also provide a lot of work. Buses connect the province with Kigali and Bujumbura , the largest city in Burundi. Tourism is growing.
