Guitarama is the second largest city in Rwanda . The city is located about 40 kilometers west of the capital Kigali and has about 85,000 inhabitants.

Since the territorial reform of Jan. 1, 2006, Guitarama is part of the Southern Province and the administrative center of the Guitarama District . The southern province was created in 2006 from the amalgamation of the province of Ruhengeri , the province of Butare and the province of Guitarama , of which Guitarama had been the capital until then.

history
In 1961, the so-called Guitarama coup took place in Guitarama . All mayors and councilors had been invited to a conference. At this conference, a transitional constitution was surprisingly adopted, a provisional parliament and a transitional president appointed. This event led to the end of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Republic of Rwanda.
In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide , Guitarama Prison was (over) one of the country's eleven prisons.
