Butare is a city in southern Rwanda and, along with the capital Kigali, the country's cultural center.
Butare had about 47,000 inhabitants in 2001, today (2005) about 70,000 people should live and work in the city.
history
Butare was founded in 1920 and named after the Belgian Queen Astrid Astrida . Butare was the capital of the former League of Nations mandate administered by Belgium , Rwanda-Urundi Territory, until the country became independent.
Education and culture
Butare is home to the National University of Rwanda, which has several faculties and around 8,000 students, and the National Museum of Rwanda , which has interesting exhibits from pre-colonial times, including replica huts from that period. The Institute for Technological and Scientific Research is located in the city, as are a large number of secondary schools.
Flora and fauna
Because of the climatic and geographical characteristics of the area, there are many endemic species around Butare .
