Paul Legband

Paul Legband (born June 28, 1876 in Braunschweig , † May 1, 1942 in Hamburg ) was a German director and set designer .

Life

Legband studied modern literature, art history and languages ​​from 1896 to 1901. In 1904 he was promoted to Dr. phil. is doing her doctorate with a thesis on the "Munich stage and literature in the 18th century". Before and afterwards he worked as a cultural journalist and editor. From 1906 (according to other sources: 1907) to mid-1911 Legband was director of the drama school of the German Theater in Berlin . In 1911 he was appointed director of the newly opened Freiburg City Theater , where he stayed until 1916. In 1917/18 he worked in Strasbourg. Employed in 1918 and 1919 as head director at the Volksbühne Berlin , in the same year he began to direct feature films in which Hans Albers often appeared at the beginning of his career. In 1921 Legband took over the management of the Wuppertaler Bühnen , which he held until 1925. In 1925 he headed the Düsseldorf open-air theater, in 1926/27 he was chief director and deputy director at the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart , and from 1927 to 1930 director in Mönchengladbach . From 1930 to probably May 1933 he was the artistic director of the Erfurt City Theater . He then headed the Altona City Theater until 1942 . In addition to his temporary film work, he also staged plays and operas.

Legband was married to the costume designer Else Oppler , since 1904 Else Oppler-Legband (born Oppler, born February 21, 1875 ), pupil of Maximilian Dasio in Munich, Henry van de Velde in Berlin and Peter Behrens in Nuremberg.
