Old playhouse

The Alte Schauspielhaus is located in an Art Nouveau building on Kleine Königstrasse in the center of Stuttgart, which was built in 1909 by the architects Albert Eitel and Eugen Steigleder .

On November 6, 1909, the old theater was opened on the historic site of a former legation barracks. The characteristic semicircular Art Nouveau facade from then still shapes its exterior today. The Alte Schauspielhaus experienced its heyday under its director Claudius Kraushaar , who, however, was unable to continue operating under the National Socialists because of his Jewish descent. In the 1960s, the legendary ensemble around Elisabeth Flickenschildt , Edith Heerdegen and Erich Ponto could be seen in the Altes Schauspielhaus . When the State Theater's theater moved into the newly opened Little House in 1962, the Old Playhouse was initially left to decay. In 1984 it was reopened after an extensive renovation (including by Roland Ostertag ). Elert Bode , who had directed the comedy at the Marquardt since 1976, took over the management . He gave the old theater its current name and made it famous again.

Since its reopening in the 1980s, the theater has been characterized by a demanding acting program. Classical plays as well as contemporary theater and musical productions are on the program. The Alte Schauspielhaus is played every day from September to July, except on Sundays.

In 1976 Elert Bode took over the management of the comedy at the Marquardt and from 1984 ran it together with the Alten Schauspielhaus Stuttgart . When Carl Philip von Maldeghem took over the management of the comedy in the Marquardt and the Altes Schauspielhaus in August 2002, the comedy theater was renovated.

The program covers the entire range of comedic stage entertainment, from tabloids and romantic comedies to Swabian dialect pieces to classical comedy with previous guest appearances by artists such as Walter Schultheiß , Joerg Adae and Monika Hirschle .
