from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Philip Graf von Maldeghem (* May 1969 in Prien am Chiemsee , Bavaria ) is director and general manager . In autumn 2002 he took over the management of the Schauspielbühnen Stuttgart . Since summer 2009 he has been director of the Salzburg State Theater .

Life

Maldeghem has a law degree , a PhD in legal philosophy, and a one-year course at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York . After completing his studies, he worked as an assistant director at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge . Maldeghem was press officer and personal advisor to Gérard Mortiers at the Salzburg Festival for three years . From 1997 to 2002 he worked regularly with Peter Stein as co-director, production manager and assistant director at the Salzburg Easter Festival , the Maggio Musicale in Florence and at the Vienna State Opera . From 1998 he worked at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe as in-house director and personal advisor to the artistic director Pavel Fieber and staged in theater as well as in musicals and operas.

In 2001, Claudio Abbado invited von Maldeghem to stage the new production of the opera Simone Boccanegra in Ferrara, with which Claudio Abbado directed an opera production in Italy for the first time since he was music director at La Scala.

The collaboration with Claudio Abbado continued with a production of the oratorio Manfred with Bruno Ganz in the title role and the Berliner Philharmoniker .

Carl Philip von Maldeghem founded the seminar program "management-by-shakespeare" with Cordula Beelitz-Frank in 2009, which has established itself as the leading program in German-speaking countries.

Directorship

In autumn 2002 von Maldeghem took over the management of the theater in Stuttgart, the old theater and the Komödie im Marquardt, at the time the youngest director of a large spoken theater in German-speaking countries. Under Carl Philip von Maldeghem's leadership, the number of visitors increased by 50,000 to 232,000 between 2002 and 2006. This placed the theaters among the five most visited German theaters. He opened up numerous other venues (theater under the roof, theater above the clouds on the Stuttgart TV tower, castle courtyard, night program) and founded the International Theater Stuttgart in 2007 as a new program line.

In 2007, Carl Philip von Maldeghem was elected Intendant of the Salzburg State Theater. In summer 2009 he returned to Salzburg in this new position. An artistic upswing can already be seen in all branches in the first season. In the acting division, which is headed by the general manager as acting director, the breakthrough comes with the inaugural production of Goethe's Faust I. The German-language premiere of the Handke / Wenders screenplay Himmel über Berlin in its own version for Salzburg also brought a surprising artistic success . Further productions: John von Düffel's King Shakespeare as a world premiere and Ödön von Horváth's Youth Without God in its own dramatization. In the first year of the directorship of Carl Philip von Maldeghems, an increase in attendance of 29% could be reported, after two seasons an increase in attendance of 46% was recorded. The number of performances could be increased significantly, the occupancy rate of the theater rose to a total of 85.02%.

In March 2012, the production Der Ring des Nibelungen was created as a co-production of the Salzburg State Theater and the Salzburg Marionette Theater, in which actors and marionettes acted together. This game concept already proved to be a great success in the Salzburg game series and the production was invited to guest performances in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Brussels and Weimar.

The joint work with the Salzburg Marionette Theater continued in the production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte , which was shown as a large version with orchestras and singers on the stage of the State Theater and as a small version on the stage of the Marionette Theater.

Extraordinary projects by the directorship took place in the Felsenreitschule, one of the central venues of the Salzburg Festival. With the double production Faust I (in the Landestheater) and Faust II (in the Felsenreitschule) a plan by the festival founder Max Reinhardt was completed.

The Dionysia functioned as a theater marathon based on ancient models , in which the play Prometheus by Aeschylus, the ballet Medea by Reginaldo Oliveira, the opera oratorio Oedipus Rex by Igor Stravinsky and the comedy The Peace by Aristophanes were performed in one evening.

In 2018 the German-language premiere of the musical Kick it like Beckham was presented at the Salzburger Landestheater.

Important directors * who work regularly at the Salzburg State Theater are Andreas Gergen , Jacopo Spirei, Amelie Niermeyer , Alexandra Liedtke and Volkmar Kamm.

In 2018 the production Brokeback Mountain, inspired by Gerard Mortier, was invited as a guest performance at the New York City Opera .

The productions Homo Faber and The Sound of Music were present in the program of the Landestheater for 8 and 10 seasons respectively.

At the beginning of 2019, the city of Cologne announced that von Maldeghem will take over the management of the Schauspiel Köln from summer 2021, succeeding Stefan Bachmann . The decision in favor of Maldeghem was criticized by various cultural workers. Eight days after Maldeghem announced his move to Cologne, he revised his decision and announced that he had decided to stay at the Salzburg State Theater and not to move to the Cologne Theater.

The main reason for this was an initiative by Governor Wilfried Haslauer , who invited Carl Philip von Maldeghem to stay in Salzburg: “Under his leadership, the State Theater has developed excellently - we are proud of this house. It is an integral part of our cultural identity and it is a good feeling to know that this theater is in good hands. "

In March 2019, Carl Philip von Maldeghem's production Faust I, which has been running since 2009, is recognized as "modern, faithful to the work and cheeky" in a broadcast by the SWR's knowledge desk and recommended as a "prime example of dealing with classics" for the Abitur preparation in Baden-Württemberg.
