The festival takes place annually in the Teatro Regio in Parma , in the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Busseto and at other "Terra di Verdi" venues in Emilia-Romagna , such as Reggio nell'Emilia , Fidenza , Fontanellato , Fontevivo and Torrechiara .

history

The festival was founded in 1989 and initially took place until 1993. In 2001 it was revived on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's death and held every year initially in the late spring. Since 2007 it has been taking place in October, the month the composer was born.

During the festival, not only are Verdi's operas performed at the various venues for a month, but there are also concerts, recitals, exhibitions, conferences and readings related to the Italian musician.

Many well-known artists have participated in the festival from the beginning, including Bruno Bartoletti , Riccardo Chailly , Daniele Gatti , Lorin Maazel , Zubin Mehta , Riccardo Muti , Daniel Oren , Antonio Pappano and Yuri Temirkanov .

The Festival Verdi received new impulses through unusual productions and outstanding singers from the director of the Teatro Regio in Parma, Anna Maria Meo. In addition to the paid opera performances and concert events with “Verdi Off”, it also introduced a free supporting program.

“Every day at 1 p.m. a window in the Teatro Regio opens and a singer belts out an aria, which brings traffic to a standstill for a short time. There is an open-air marathon of all local choirs and many citizens open their private apartments for short concerts. "

Since 2016, the almost 400-year-old Teatro Farnese in Parma has also been used as a performance venue for the Verdi Festival. In 2016 Peter Greenaway was allowed to stage Verdi's opera “ Giovanna d'Arco ” here, in 2017 it was Graham Vick who performed another early work by the composer, Stiffelio .

The conductor Roberto Abbado has been music director of the Festival Verdi since the beginning of 2018 .

Goal setting

The Verdi Festival has two goals: on the one hand, to present Giuseppe Verdi's scores scientifically as faithfully as possible, and on the other, to maintain his entire oeuvre. For example, under the direction of Professor Francesco Izzo, the University of Southampton founded a scientific committee that supports the selection of programs and the faithful performance of the operas from Verdi's extensive repertoire. By 2013, the year of Verdi's 200th birthday, the festival organizers had also set themselves the goal of performing and recording all Verdi operas in high quality.
