history

Ranuccio I , Duke of Parma and Piacenza had the theater built on the first floor of the Palazzo della Pilotta in Parma, in a former tournament hall. It was opened in autumn 1618 and dedicated to the ancient goddess of war Bellona, but remained unused for ten years. The first theatrical performance took place on December 21, 1628, on the occasion of the wedding of Odoardo , Ranuccio's son, to Margherita de 'Medici . The play Mercurio e Marte was given by Claudio Achillini with music by Claudio Monteverdi : a sea battle was also offered. Due to the high expenditure of this type of courtly productions, the theater was only performed nine times until 1732.

The construction

The architect Giovanni Battista Aleotti called "Argenta" (after his birthplace) took to build the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza for example, the work of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio from the year 1580 , to the Teatro all'Antica of Sabbioneta , built from 1588 by 1590 by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi .

In the 87 m long and 32 m wide hall, U-shaped wooden stands were erected, which reached a height of 22 m in 14 rows. The stage measures 40 × 12 m. The wooden structure was stuccoed to simulate marble. The figure decorations also corresponded to the character of ephemeral architecture.
