Sir Graham Vick CBE (born December 30, 1953 in Birkenhead , † July 17, 2021 in London ) was a British opera director . Among other things, he was the founder of the Birmingham Opera Company and known internationally for his experimental productions of traditional and modern operas.

Live and act

Graham Vick graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester . At the age of 24, he staged the opera Savitri by Gustav Holst at the Scottish Opera and worked as artistic director at this opera house from 1984 to 1987. In 1987 he founded the City of Birmingham Touring Opera (since 2001 the Birmingham Opera Company ) as artistic director. From 1994 to 2000 he was the artistic director of the Glyndebourne Festival and worked there as a director until 2017.

He has staged opera productions at renowned opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , the Milan Scala , the Rome Opera , the San Francisco Opera , the Opera di Firenze , the Paris Opera , the Royal Copenhagen Opera , the Gothenburg Opera , the Vienna State Opera , the Bavarian State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Mariinski Theater , the Salzburg Festival , the Bregenz Festival and the Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro .

Particularly noteworthy are his directorial work for the world premiere of Luciano Berio's opera Outis at the Teatro alla Scala (1996), for the British premiere of Beriots Un re in ascolto at the Royal Opera House (1989) and for the world premiere of the opera Wednesday from the Licht von cycle Karlheinz Stockhausen with the Birmingham Opera Company (2012).

Numerous opera productions under his direction have been recorded and are available on DVD.

Vick taught as visiting professor at Oxford University (2002/2003 and 2014/2015) and since 2017 at the Royal Northern College of Music ( International Chair in Opera ).

He died in July 2021 at the age of 67 from complications from COVID-19 .
