Leo Nucci
Leo Nucci (born April 16, 1942 in Castiglione dei Pepoli near Bologna ) is an Italian opera singer ( baritone ). He is married to the Italian soprano Adriana Anelli and has a daughter with her.
life and career
During his apprenticeship as a locksmith Leo Nucci began to have his voice trained by Mario Bigazzi from 1957 and then continued his vocal studies with Giuseppe Marchesi in Bologna between 1959 and 1968. As a student of Marchesi, he won a singing competition in Spoleto in 1967 . This success earned him his first stage appearance as Figaro in Rossini's Barbiere di Siviglia . However, he initially did not pursue a solo career, but became a member of the choir of La Scala in Milan . After further studies with Maestro Ottoviano Bizzani in Milan , he won another competition (Concours de Vercelli ) in 1973 and made his debut again as a soloist, this time in the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto . After some time at Italian provincial theaters, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1976. In the next few years, she made her debuts at other important international opera stages ( Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Vienna State Opera , New York Metropolitan Opera ). Since then he has appeared worldwide in his over 45 roles. Nucci has sung the role of Rigoletto alone over 400 times. He worked with almost all important conductors and singing colleagues and recorded an almost unmanageable number of records and CDs.
Nucci's refusal in 1986 to take part in a Rigoletto production by director Johannes Schaaf at the Hamburg State Opera because of the modern directional concept, which prompted the director at the time, Rolf Liebermann , to dismiss Schaaf and an old, more conventional production by Gilbert Deflo from the Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg Buying in as a substitute to keep Nucci meant that Nucci encountered some headwinds from parts of the German audience and especially the German press. From then on he seldom made guest appearances on German opera stages because of the conflicting attitudes that had become apparent. In contrast, Nucci regularly enjoys great success at the Zurich Opera House in performances of Verdi's Nabucco , Ernani , Stiffelio , Rigoletto , Il trovatore , La traviata , I vespri siciliani , Simon Boccanegra and La forza del destino . He is also a regular guest at the Vienna State Opera.
More recently he gave the 3rd Herbert von Karajan Memorial Concert (on June 6, 2003) in the Congress Centrum Ulm under the musical direction of the conductor James Allen Gähres . Nucci sang Italian opera arias and duets with the singers Stella Grigorian and Vera Schoenenberg . In July 2010 he appeared at the Solothurn Opera Festival as Rigoletto alongside Celso Albelo (Duke of Mantua) and Eva Lind (Gilda).
In January 2016 he sang Rigoletto at La Scala in Milan alongside Nadine Sierra as Gilda. In February 2020, Leo Nucci sang Nabucco at the Teatro Regio in Turin at the age of almost 78 .
