Carlos Álvarez (born August 12, 1966 in Málaga ) is a Spanish opera singer ( baritone ).

life and work

Carlos Álvarez was educated at the conservatory in his hometown. He made his stage debut in 1990 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid in Pablo Sorozábal's La del manojo de rosas . Since then he has appeared in leading roles at the most important opera houses in the world: at the Teatro alla Scala , in Covent Garden , at the Opéra Bastille , at the Gran Teatre del Liceu , at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía , at the Teatro Real , at the Bayerische wie the Hamburg State Opera , the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the Washington National Opera and at the Zurich Opera .

He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1995 as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia and has since sung fifteen roles in almost 170 performances, including (re) cast as Sulpice in La fille du régiment in the 2013/14 season .

At the Salzburg Festival in 1998 and 1999 he played Rodrigo Marchese di Posa in the five-act French version of Verdi's Don Carlo , in 2008 he was Iago in Otello .

At the festive premiere of the original version of Giacomo Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on December 7, 2016, Álvarez played the American consul Sharpless.
