The Teatro de la Zarzuela is a musical theater in the Spanish capital, Madrid . It is mainly used to perform the classic Zarzuela , a typically Spanish genre of musical theater that is similar to the operetta .

history

The theater was inaugurated on October 10, 1856, the date of the 26th birthday of Queen Isabel II de España . The architects were Jerónimo de la Gándara and José María Guallart y Sánchez. Thanks to the initiative of the Sociedad Lírico Española , the Teatro de la Zarzuela quickly became an important venue for the performance of Zarzuelas.

After a major fire in 1909, the building had to be almost completely rebuilt and was able to reopen in 1914. After the Teatro Real was closed in 1925 due to dilapidation, the Teatro de la Zarzuela was the most important performance location for the music theater in Madrid for decades and remained an interim location for the opera until the renovation was completed after the decision of the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1985 to build a national opera house in Madrid des Teatro Real 1997. In 1998, four years after it was declared a historical monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ), the building was renovated and rebuilt.

The horseshoe-shaped auditorium, including the three floors with box seats, has 1242 seats. The theater bar is located on the first floor in the lobby area. The building does not have an elevator between floors.
