Carlo Rizzi (born July 19, 1960 in Milan ) is an Italian conductor . He specializes in particular in the classics of Italian opera, but also conducts a broader repertoire.

Life

Carlo Rizzi studied piano, composition and conducting at the Milan Conservatory . He then worked as a répétiteur at La Scala in Milan and made his debut at the Angelicum in Milan in 1982 as a conductor with the opera L'ajo nell'imbarazzo by Gaetano Donizetti . In 1983 he studied with the Russian conductor Vladimir Delman and in 1984 with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana . In 1985 he won the Concorso Toscanini in Parma and was the winner of Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff .

During the 1980s he conducted primarily in Italy, but also made his debut in the Netherlands and Japan. In 1988 he conducted for the first time in Great Britain as part of a performance at the Buxton Festival, and the following year at the Sydney Opera House , where he appeared again in the following two years. In the same year he made his debut at the Dutch National Opera . In Great Britain he also conducted the Opera North in Leeds , at the Welsh National Opera and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

In 1991 he conducted Verdi's Il trovatore at the reopening of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa , which had been closed since its destruction in World War II . In 1992 he was appointed director of the Welsh National Opera to succeed Charles Mackerras , a position he held until 2001 and from 2004 to 2007. In this role he conducted both the dramatic and symphonic repertoire and performed with the local orchestra for the first time at the London Proms . In 2015 it made him its honorary conductor.

In Germany he conducted for the first time at the Deutsche Oper Berlin . He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1993 with La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini . Since then he has performed there regularly. The role of Violetta was sung by Anna Netrebko , the tenor role of Alfredo Germont was played by Rolando Villazón . The seven scheduled performances are said to have been overbooked several times and tickets are said to have been traded at prices of over 2000 euros. While Netrebko and Villazón received positive reviews (both of the performance and the recording), Rizzi's conducting was sometimes criticized.

In 2016 Rizzi conducted the Welsh National Opera company for the world premiere of Iain Bell's opera In Parenthesis at the Wales Millennium Center in Cardiff.
