He made his debut in 1973 (at the age of 21) in Aosta in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto . At the beginning of his career Corbelli sang lyrical baritone roles, but his natural talent for comedy prompted him to switch to the comic field. The Buffo roles he sang and recorded include Dr. Bartolo in Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , Taddeo in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri , Don Geronio in Rossini's Il turco in Italia , Dr. Dulcamara in Gaetano Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and the title role in Donizetti's Don Pasquale . On November 26, 2007, while rehearsing for La Cenerentola in London , Corbelli jumped in at the last minute for a production of L'elisir d'amore at the Royal Opera House . He sang the role of Belcore in the second half of the opera from the side of the stage while Ludovic Tézier , who had sung the first half with a sore throat, played the role.
From his debut in 1997 to March 2012, Corbelli had 64 appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City , including 26 as Dandini in La Cenerentola , 7 as Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore , 15 in the title role of Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi , 8 as Sergeant Sulpice in Gaetano Donizetti's La fille du régiment and 8 as Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri .

He has also sung roles in later Italian comic operas, for example the title roles in Verdi's Falstaff and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi .
Alessandro Corbelli has contributed to numerous recordings, including Francesco Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden) and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi (Glyndebourne).
