María José Bayo (born May 28, 1961 in Fitero , Navarra , Spain ) is a Spanish opera and concert singer with a soprano voice .

Life

María Bayo studied at the Pamplona Conservatory and the Detmold University of Music . She attended master classes with the Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza . Her international career began in 1988 when she won first prize at the Belvedere competition in Vienna. This was followed by engagements at many large opera houses and festivals.

Critics praise her charisma, the brilliance of her timbre, and the elegance and harmony of her voice. María Bayo is referred to as a “representative” of the Spanish baroque , which is a focus of her work. Together with Plácido Domingo , she has given numerous concerts of Spanish music.

Her performances were accompanied by well-known conductors: Giuseppe Sinopoli , René Jacobs , Riccardo Chailly , Sir Colin Davis , Lorin Maazel and others.
