María Teresa Berganza Vargas (born March 16, 1935 in Madrid ) is a Spanish opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ). She is particularly known for roles in operas by Rossini , Mozart and Bizet and stands out for her technical virtuosity , musical intelligence and impressive stage presence.

Life

Berganza studied piano and singing at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid , where she was named best in singing in 1954. In 1955 she made her concert debut in Madrid .

She had her first appearance in an opera in 1957 as Dorabella in Così fan tutte during the Aix-en-Provence Festival. In the same year she made her debut at La Scala in Milan and the following year at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival . In 1959 she appeared as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden , and this would become one of her star roles. In 1967 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro . She made her first appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1964 with a recital. Her repertoire includes pieces in Spanish, French, German and Russian.

From 1957 to 1977 she was married to the pianist Félix Lavilla , with whom she regularly appeared and released recordings and with whom she has three children, including the soprano Cecilia Lavilla Berganza .

In 1991 she and six other Spanish singers received the Prince of Asturias Prize for Art and Literature.

In 1992 Teresa Berganza participated in the opening ceremonies of the World Exhibition in Seville and the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. She became the first woman to be accepted into the Spanish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1994 .

In 2010 she was professor at the chair for singing at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid.
