The WeltWald Harz (until 2009: Arboretum Bad Grund ) is an arboretum on the northwestern edge of the Harz near Bad Grund ( district of Göttingen , Lower Saxony ). It has existed since 1975. The Riefensbeek Forest Office , which belongs to the Lower Saxony State Forests, is responsible . In the area around the town of Bad Grund, 285 tree and 238 shrub species from various forests in the temperate climate zone were planted and cultivated on an area of around 100 ha . There are a total of 113,000 trees here .

Conception

The aim of the Lower Saxony State Forests is to investigate the adaptation to the local climate and growth characteristics of these foreign tree species. This is to determine the location requirements of these tree species for later cultivation attempts. When setting up the arboretum , special care was taken to ensure that no unstable pure stands were created, but that entire forest communities from the individual climatic regions with the complete spectrum of tree and shrub species are planted.

In order to have an exact picture of the development of the trees, they are included in a long-term observation and measurement scheme. The amount is determined every five years. Furthermore, various biotic and abiotic damage are recorded and the plant-specific processes recorded over the course of the year. In order to check their later suitability as economic tree species, wood removals are constantly being carried out in the individual forest communities.

Location

Geologically, the arboretum belongs to the Upper Harz . The southern and western parts are in the from greywacke and shale of the Carboniferous existing Clausthaler Kulmfaltzone. The north-eastern part lies in the area of the reef limestone block of the Iberg complex. From the geological starting materials, mostly low-base, silty and loamy silicate weathered soils have developed. The water balance ranges from moderate to fairly fresh. The nutrient supply varies from moderate to pretty good.

The arboretum is located in the transition area from the submontane to the montane altitude level between 305 and 448  m above sea level. NHN . The potentially natural forest community would be the Hainsimsen - beech forest . The exposure of the site ranges from 0 to 30 degrees. The mean temperature is 7.5 ° C. The mean precipitation in the year is 1070 mm. The main vegetation season accounts for 308 mm.

Others

The Arboretum Bad Grund offers visitors not only the various forest communities but also various special events. In the Advent season, cut greenery and Christmas trees from the area are offered.

Twice a year there is an international Nordic walking run on the arboretum . The Lower Saxony Forestry Office in Riefensbeek is available to make an exact appointment. The Forestry Department is also responsible for organizing guided tours, for example during the Indian summer in autumn or when the rhododendrons are in bloom in spring.

The adventure trail, newly established in spring 2012, Forests of North America - Home of the Indians ( Indian Trail ; 1.7 km) provides information about the tallest trees in the world and the life of the Indians.
