The Harz hiking pin is a system for recognizing active hikers . By reaching and documenting hiking destinations, they can acquire hiking pins of various degrees. With 222 stamping points in the three federal states of Saxony-Anhalt , Lower Saxony and Thuringia in five districts in the Harz Mountains and a five-digit number of participants, the system has achieved high supra-regional importance.

purpose

With the hiking pin, Harz vacationers should be set an attractive goal and their length of stay extended. Vacationers and locals alike should be encouraged to go hiking.

In addition, the system helps hikers to get to know various particularly attractive hiking destinations and hiking trails. For this purpose, efforts have been made to place the stamp points at particularly interesting viewpoints, geological or botanical features, cultural or historical places. With a few exceptions, the stamping points are in places that can only be reached on foot or by bike.

Awards by the hiking pin

The Harzer hiking pin can be hiked in several stages:

  • 008 stamps: Harz hiking pin in bronze
  • 016 stamps: Harz hiking pin in silver
  • 024 stamps: Harz hiking pin in gold
  • 050 stamp: Harzer Wanderkönig
  • 111 stamps: Harzer Steiger (111 different stamping points, 22 of which are special mining sites)
  • 150 stamp: Harzer Kaiserschuh
  • 222 stamp: Harzer Wanderkaiser

Gradually increasing the award is permitted. There is no time limit within which the stamps must be collected. Since 2011, there has been an award for younger hikers as a hiking princess or hiking prince for children up to eleven years of age after proof of eleven hiked stamps.

There is also a hiking pin "Harzer Hexenstieg", for which a total of 20 stamps in connection with the Harzer Hexenstieg have to be presented since 2014 . The hiking pins "Harzer Grenzweg" (20 stamps) and "Goethe im Harz" (28 stamps) have also existed since 2010. In order to acquire these, the relevant stamps must be proven both in the normal hiking pass and in the respective booklet.

In addition to the regular 222 stamps, it is also possible to collect various special stamps each year, which are noted at the end of the hiking pass. However, these special postmarks are only of collector value and are not decisive for receiving an award. An exception is the hiking pin "Harzer Klosterwanderweg", which was created in spring 2017. In order to receive the copper pilgrim's cross , nine special stamps must be proven along the corresponding Harz monastery hiking trail .

Procedure for acquiring the hiking pin

Before the first hike, a hiking pass must be purchased, which can be obtained for a small amount in the tourism and spa facilities of the Harz locations, sometimes also in bookshops. It is also advisable to have a card on which the stamp locations are noted, but these can also be researched in other ways (e.g. on the website of the organizer).

The hiking pass must be stamped at every stamping point. If the stamp is missing, a number can be noted as an alternative, so that vandalism cannot do any fundamental damage to the system.

When the required number of stamps is reached, the hiking pass is presented to one of the issuing offices and the badge is purchased for a small amount after a corresponding examination.

particularities

The Harz hiking pin stands out clearly from comparable hiking pin systems: there will only be a few systems that contain 222 stamp points across federal states and districts. In addition, the system is relatively well secured against vandalism and can therefore be installed anywhere in the area, while in other systems the stamping points are tied to restaurants, shops or similar facilities, so that the user is dependent on opening times.

history

The initiator and operator is the association “Healthy getting older in the Harz e. V. ”based in Blankenburg , which receives support from various public institutions. The first stamp locations were created around 2004. At the start of 2006, around 5000 hiking passes were issued. The current system with the 222 stamp positions has been in place since April 2007 and should not be increased. However, the locations of the stamp offices can change to a minor extent. Since the season opened in April 2012, there have been eleven new stamping stations, for which eleven existing stamp boxes have been converted.

resonance

The system is extremely popular and demand continues to grow. In 2006 alone, around 10,000 hiking passes were sold. In 2015 almost 20,000 hiking passes were issued. It is also noteworthy that every year there is a three-digit number of hikers who hike the "Harzer Wanderkaiser". In 2018, the 5000th Wanderkaiser award was given since the hiking pin was introduced. Since the stamping points are spread over an area of around 2500 square kilometers, extensive hikes are required to acquire this title.

Former stamp offices

Stamp locations with numbers that are mentioned twice have already been changed twice.

Special postmarks

In addition to the “Wandering Stamp Box” mentioned here and the special stamp offices for the 20th anniversary of German reunification, there are regularly other special stamp offices, for example at events, guided hikes or other occasions.

Wandering stamp box

The hiking stamp box has been in a fixed location for two months at a time since the 2010/11 hiking season, so that a total of six stations can be hiked per year or season. A special stamp pass is issued every year for entering the special stamps.

In the meantime, some previously stationary special stamp offices have become regular stamp offices for the Harzer Wanderadel (No. 83 - Austbergturm , No. 100 - Ebersburg , No. 147 - Eleonorenblick, No. 58 - Little horse, No. 86 - Stangerode Wildlife Park (listed as bison enclosure)).
