Schwenda is a district of the municipality of Südharz in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

Schwenda is 450 m above sea level. in the Lower Harz on the state road that leads from the Großer Auerberg via Karlsrode to Roßla .

history

The place is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 532 as "Wenda unterm Berg im Harzgau", but there is no evidence of this. His name is traced back from "schwendan, shrink" d. H. clearing, cutting down. Schwenda belonged to the property of the Counts of Stolberg and was in the Hayn (Harz) office of the Stolberg-Stolberg County . Until 1815 the place belonged to the Electorate of Saxony and then came to the administrative district of Merseburg of the Prussian province of Saxony .

In 1819 597 people lived in 110 houses in Schwenda.

From 1952 to 1990 Schwenda belonged to the GDR district of Halle .

On January 1st, 2010 the communities of Schwenda, Bennungen , Breitenstein , Breitungen , Dietersdorf , Drebsdorf , Hainrode , Hayn (Harz) , Kleinleinungen , Questenberg , Roßla , Rottleberode and Uftrungen merged to form the new community of Südharz. At the same time the administrative community Roßla-Südharz , to which Schwenda belonged, was dissolved.

Attractions

Ev. Church of Saints Cyriaci and Nicolai

The Protestant Church of St. Cyriaki and Nicolai is a baroque central building that was built from 1736 to 1738 by Johann Friedrich Penther . It is modeled on the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the Peterskirche in Rome .

The octagonal round building, which rests on eight columns, has an external height of 34 m and an internal diameter of 15 m. The dome shows the eye of God in the middle, around which the pictures of the four evangelists are grouped and below the four archangels, in between the signs of the year and the old signs of the month are painted. The furnishings from the time of construction have been preserved.
