geography

Geographical location

Questenberg is located in the Lower Harz in the Harz Nature Park . It is located about 12 km west-northwest of the district town of Sangerhausen . Flows through it by the Wet , a tributary of the line , and pass the resulting Karstwanderweg . To the north above the village there are remains (fortification walls and tower) of Questenberg Castle on the southern slope of the steep castle hill .

Local division

In addition to Questenberg, the area of the former municipality of Questenberg includes the village of Agnesdorf , which is located about 2 km west-northwest of the core town.

history

The first traces of settlement date from the 5th and 6th centuries BC.

The Sanskrit and Buddha researcher Rudolf Otto Franke (born June 24, 1862 as a miller's son in Wickerode) attended the elementary school in Questenberg for four years.

On January 1, 2010, the communities of Questenberg, Bennungen , Breitenstein , Breitungen , Dietersdorf , Drebsdorf , Hainrode , Hayn (Harz) , Kleinleinungen , Roßla , Rottleberode , Schwenda and Uftrungen merged to form the new community of Südharz. At the same time the administrative community Roßla-Südharz , to which Questenberg belonged, was dissolved.

Culture and sights

church

At the northern edge of the village on the lower southern slope of the castle hill stands the church of St. Mary's Birth , which was first mentioned in 1495.

Quest and Quest Festival

The quest

The village is known for the Questen festival, which is celebrated annually on the weekend of Pentecost on the Questenberg west of the village . On Whit Monday at sunrise, the wreath of the quests made of birch and beech green with two so-called tassels is removed from an oak trunk several meters high and decorated with fresh green is pulled up again in the afternoon. Remnants of a festival of the pagan festival at the summer solstice are believed to be behind it . Another legend traces the origin of this festival back to the lost and found daughter of the knight Knaut on Questenberg.

Roland

The Roland

Furthermore, the Questenberger Roland gives cause for speculation. Since Questenberg was never a place of greater importance, a Roland statue seems out of place here. The assumptions range from a symbol for market and minting rights to a mere copy of the Nordhausen Roland , which the Questenberger looks very similar.
