history

The hilltop castle was built around 1200 to 1250, probably by the Counts of Beichlingen . As Servus, "Fredericus de Questenberg" is named in 1275 in the entourage of Count Friedrich von Beichlingen, who belonged to a noble family of Questenberg named after her . The Counts of Hohnstein had been the owners since 1305 . In 1349 the castle was first named directly as "hus zcuo Questinberg".

The knight Heinrich von me Rade and his brothers received Questenberg and seven associated villages as fiefs . In 1383 the Counts of Hohnstein sold the property to Landgrave Balthasar of Thuringia . The Thuringian landgraves used the castle and manor uninterruptedly as a mortgage. From 1424 to 1430, Landgrave Friedrich I pledged the "castle" and office of Questenberg for 450 silver marks to Dietrich von Witzleben and his son Friedrich. In 1430 the landgraves sold the rule to the Counts of Stolberg . As under the Thuringians, the property also served the Stolbergers primarily for pawn shops. First the castle was pledged to the noble Knaut family . From 1468 to 1486 the pledge went to the von Bertkow family in Altmark and then back to the Knauts until 1670. From 1645 the Stolberg-Wernigerode line was feudal lord .

In 1718 the property was bought by the Counts of Stolberg-Roßla. One last military use was the castle in 1633, when the war she Commissioner Valenthin Roth Mehler as a base for a company against the resin protecting served. The castle was already described as desolate during the Peasants' War. In 1649 the castle was so dilapidated that only a few cellars were still usable.

Förderverein Questenburg eV

The castle ruins with their keep in the "Karstlandschaft Südharz" biosphere reserve are of particular cultural and historical importance.

Today the castle is structurally in a very bad condition. Since the municipality as the owner is not in a position to take over the maintenance, a non-profit association was founded in October 2013 to guarantee the preservation and security of the existing building fabric. The aim is to make the castle accessible again.
