The castle New Morungen is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Morungen in Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .
The castle was a small imperial ministerial castle . It has been in ruins since the 16th century. She is associated with the minstrel Heinrich von Morungen .
history
The castle was evidently built as a replacement for Alt-Morungen Castle . The construction seems to go hand in hand with the abandonment of the old castle. Like the old castle, it was the seat of an imperial castle man . Since 1250 the Lords of Morungen existed as tenants of the Counts of Mansfeld . The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1266. In 1290 a burgrave of Morungen is mentioned. The rule Morungen was from the 13th century in varying sovereign possession. The following owners are proven:
- 1320 Thuringia ,
- 1323 Honstein and Mansfeld,
- 1408 Mansfeld,
- 1486 Saxony ,
- then again Mansfeld,
- 1655 Eberstein.
The use of the castle seems to have ended in the 15th century. As early as 1533 it was described as “completely desolate”.
