The bear monument in the Harz low mountain range is a historical memorial stone on the Ramberg massif in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt . It commemorates the last bear hunted in the Anhalt Forest (1696).

Geographical location

The Bear Monument is located in the Lower Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park in the city of Quedlinburg between the city Thale belonging district Friedrichsbrunn and the city Harzgerode belonging Mägdesprung . To the north, above the Krebsbach valley , it stands in the forest of the Ramberg massif between the Viktorshöhe and the Bremen pond next to the Bärweg forest path at around 472  m above sea level. NHN .

Last bear in the Anhalt forests

The bear monument marks the place where the last bear was shot in November 1696 in the Anhalt Forest . The monument was erected around 1900. It is a boulder on which a cast iron plate with the following inscription was attached.

"The last bear in the Anhalt Forest was shot here at the end of the seventeenth century."

Last bear in the Harz

According to unconfirmed information, the last bear in the entire Harz is said to have been shot around 90 years later near Wernigerode . The driver in Buchtekirch is said to have hunted him down between 1786 and 1788 and received a reward of a good two Reichstalers from Count zu Stolberg-Wernigerode .
