The Roßtrappe rises high above the Bodetal in the Harz Mountains. It can be reached from Thale , Treseburg or Wienrode on a road, on foot or from Thale with a chair lift . The mountain hotel of the same name with a panoramic terrace has been located on the rock since the middle of the 19th century . The mountain station of the chairlift is located near the hotel.

Nearby is the Winzenburg , a 25- hectare refugee castle in use since the Neolithic Age  with an approximately 500-meter-long rampart made of boulders and earthworks. In 1860 the Winzenburg Tower was built there as a lookout tower, which is no longer accessible today.

From the Roßtrappe there is a view of the rocks of the Hexentanzplatz , the “Stone Church”, the Bodetal and Harz foreland with the town of Thale and the Brocken .

hike

From the Roßtrappe you could descend into the Bodetal via the chute , a serpentine path. However, due to the last major rock fall in May 2010, this path is closed. The presidential path with a length of around 4 kilometers is recommended as an ascent. The Roßtrappe is included as No. 71 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.

Chair lift to the Roßtrappe

Chairlift

Since 1980, a 559-meter-long single chairlift from Thale, built by the Czech company Transporta Chrudim, has led up to the Roßtrappe rock massif in four minutes. The valley station was at 209 meters. In 2005 the old chair lift was replaced by a new double chair lift. The number of supports was reduced from 13 to eight, while the rope strength was increased from 28 millimeters to 32 millimeters. It is driven by a 110 kW motor in the valley station located at 177 meters, which transports the 50 gondolas at a speed of 1.5 m / s. The 668 meter long chairlift overcomes a height difference of 244 meters and can transport up to 400 people per hour. The mountain station is located at 421 meters about 500 meters north of the lookout rock.

legend

Alleged hoof print in the rock of the horse bustard

The jump forecast by pursued once the knight Bodo of Bohemia the beautiful princess Brunhilde, he wanted to marry against their will. Brunhilde escaped on a white steed , but suddenly a deep abyss opened up in front of her. With a bold leap she crossed over to the rock on the other side, losing her golden crown, which sank in the raging river. However, her pursuer fell into the depths and was transformed into a black dog that has been guarding the princess' crown in the Bodekessel ever since. The impression of the horse's hoof can still be seen today. The knight Bodo gave the river the name Bode .

According to one theory, the rock impression could be weathering remains of a Germanic sacrificial basin.
