Schurre (landscape part)

The Schurre 2009

The Schurre is a dump in the Bodeschlucht in the Lower Harz near Thale in Saxony-Anhalt . The block dump is in a slowly sliding motion, especially when it rains heavily, the blocks sometimes audibly “purr” down into the valley.

The name has been transferred to a well-traveled connecting route between the Bode and the legendary Rosstrappe , which was laid out in 1864 . The chute winds its way up through the steep block debris heap in 18 hairpin bends . The path has been carefully laid out and partly paved. Some of the trees planted along the way at this extreme location have survived. The ascent of the hiking trail requires a good level of fitness due to the around 200 meters of altitude and steep incline. In May 2010 there was a rock drop; since then the path has been closed. While the construction of a bypass staircase up to the first serpentine and evacuations were initially discussed, no solution has been implemented over the years that would make the chute accessible for hikers again. After the slope stabilization work for the Goetheweg in the valley was completed in December 2015, the state of Saxony-Anhalt transferred the entire Rosstrappen massif to the city of Thale in 2016. The six-week work to restore the path is currently planned for October 2020. The estimated cost is 150,000 euros.

Trivia

In November 2019, a hiker discovered in one of her photos supposedly a lifeless person on the slope of the Schurre. This triggered a major search operation by helicopter and on the ground. As it turned out later, it was a root.
