The Hahnenklee cliffs in the Harz Mountains are part of a slope interspersed with steep rock formations and a maximum of around 200 m high (maximum approx.  750  m above sea  level ) on the eastern flank of the Oder valley near Braunlage in the Lower Saxony district of Goslar .

Origin of name

The name "Hahnenkleeklippen" has nothing to do with the village of Hahnenklee in the Harz Mountains, but is derived from Hahnenkliev , which means "high cliffs".

Geographical location

The Hahnenklee cliffs are located in the Upper Harz in the Harz National Park . They are located about 1.5 km southwest of the Braunlager district of Königskrug . The cliffs are part of the eastern slope of the Oder valley there, which extends between the upper edge of a maximum of 758.1  m above sea level. NN high plateaus at almost 750  m above sea level. NN and the valley floor at the Rhume inflow or at around 550  m above sea level. NN extends; this results in a height difference of around 200 m. Some rock formations are up to 50 m high. The cliffs extend in north-south direction for about 700 m in length. On the opposite side, around 800 m away, the high cliffs on Rehberg (approx. 893  m ) limit the Oder valley.

Geology and flora

The cliffs consist of Hornfels , a metamorphic rock . Debris heaps can be found below the cliffs , the formation of which is mainly due to erosion caused by frost blasting . The cliffs are overgrown and surrounded by coniferous forest.

tourism

The Hahnenklee Cliffs are popular hiking destinations and can be hiked from Königskrug or Braunlage. From the Hahnenkleer Waldstraße hiking trail to the east of the cliffs , about 200 m south-south-east of the Hegemeister-Hartmann-Hütte ( Schutz ) refuge, a nearly 250 m long path branches off to a path at around 740  m above sea level. NN above the cliffs from the lookout point.

The cliffs are included as No. 75 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin; the stamping point is about 250 m (as the crow flies ) southwest of the lookout point on the Hahnenklee Cliffs in the aforementioned refuge.

For climbing, the cliffs used to be accessible via some relatively long and serious routes , but since 1981, due to the nature conservation regulations of the national park, climbing has been absolutely prohibited.
