The Rhume is an approximately 48 km long right tributary of the Leine in southern Lower Saxony ( Germany ).
Its source is one of the richest karst springs in Central Europe . It is fed by underground tributaries from water-rich Harz rivers .
source
The source of the Rhume is located in the eastern part of the Rotenberg ridge not far from the north-eastern outskirts of Rhumspringe and can be reached in a few minutes from a car park.
course
After its source, the Rhume flows through Rhumspringe and then mainly in a north-westerly direction south past the Rotenberg ridge, including via Gieboldehausen and Bilshausen to Lindau and Katlenburg . There it absorbs the Oder , which is not only significantly longer, but also carries more water, although it has already lost large amounts of water to the area underground. A few kilometers below, the Rhume receives another powerful inflow from the Harz with the Söse . Finally it joins the Leine coming from the south , a little northwest of Northeim, directly on the A 7 . With an annual mean of 16.5 m³ / s (Northeim gauge), it carries significantly more water than the Leine (9.8 m³ / s).

water sports
The Rhume can be used all year round with restrictions with kayaks and canoes , which can be rented near the sports field in Northeim , for example. It has a good flow rate and has some small surges. However, a filling in Katlenburg behind the road bridge is quite demanding. You can occasionally see white water canoes practicing here. While the source area and the upper reaches from kilometers 0 to 5.8 are closed all year round, the section from kilometers 5.8 to 9.0 can be used between May 15 and December 31.
Hydropower
In Northeim, the water from the Rhume is used to generate electricity in a run-of-river power plant with an output of 650 kW. There are also smaller power plants in Elvershausen and Katlenburg.
natural reserve
The Rhume offers with its floodplain endangered species such as the kingfisher , the brook lamprey , the Koppe and other habitat and is therefore part of a protected area under the Habitats Directive have been reported. The Rhume is part of the nature reserve Rhumeaue / Ellerniederung / Gillersheimer Bachtal .
