landscape

The villages are mostly embedded in the valleys of the rivers Rhume , Oder and Söse between the landscapes of Solling , Harz and Eichsfeld . The surrounding area is characterized by extensive forest areas and mainly agriculturally used meadows and fields and is partly protected as the Rhumeaue / Ellerniederung / Gillersheimer Bachtal nature reserve .

history

Old names of the place are to 1075 Diedericus de Cadalenburg, to 1076 Thiedericus de Kathalanburg, 1097 Thiederico comite de Catelenburg, 1105 (Fä. Mid 12th century) in castro suo, quod Katelenburc dicebatur, 1139 Katelenburch. Until the 19th century, Katlenburg was not the name of the village, but rather the name of the castle. The basic word is mainly -burg, -burch, -borg, -borch. It can be assumed that it is a river name in the sense of "Burg an der Katel".

Today's community Katlenburg-Lindau was formed on March 1, 1974 from the previously independent communities Katlenburg-Duhm, Lindau, Gillersheim, Berka, Elvershausen, Wachenhausen and Suterode.

Until 2014, Lindau was the seat of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), which was known as the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy (MPAE) until June 2004 .
