A Muthaus (also muscle or Moshaus = Palas ) denotes one with a castle -related residential tower and a storehouse and will therefore tower house called.

In the 4th edition (1885–1892) of Meyers Konversationslexikon , Vol. 2, p. 652 under the entry Burg :

“The most important building of the Hofburg met the Kemnate, also called the Palas (hall), Mushaus (armory) or high house, which was partly used as an apartment, but mainly as a court and therefore apart from the basement, kitchen and dining room in the lower and The second floor contained a large hall of knights and weapons, which was intended for meetings and festivities and was accessible from the courtyard by a flight of stairs (degrees). "

One of the main characteristics of a courtyard house is its function as a dining room.

Six such courageous houses from the 14th century have been preserved in southern Lower Saxony and eastern Westphalia :

  1. Hardeg Castle in Hardegsen , built in 1324. It is the oldest secular structure of this size in Lower Saxony. The rectangular building, more than 30 meters high, is particularly well preserved. It used to be the main building of Hardeg Castle and a little later a granary. Today it is an event center.
  2. Castle Lindau in Lindau (Eichsfeld) , putative start of construction in 1322. The Lindauer castle is in the Thirty Years' War destroyed, leaving only get the Mushaus. Its walls are sometimes up to five meters thick.
  3. Beverungen Castle in Beverungen . The castle was built in 1332 by the Principality of Paderborn . Almost completely destroyed by the Hessians in 1632, it was largely rebuilt in 1650. The chair museum has been located there since 1986.
  4. Lichtenau Castle in Lichtenau (Westphalia)
  5. Oldenburg in Marienmünster . The tower house (ancestral castle of the Counts of Schwalenberg) dates from the 2nd half of the 14th century
  6. Dreckburg Castle near Salzkotten , probably built between 1347 and 1357.

In Thuringia , in Bad Langensalza at Dryburg Castle, a residential tower of a similar construction that was built around 1250 has been preserved.

A particularly beautiful example of a residential tower is the former Niederungsburg Radolfshausen in Ebergötzen , built in 1508 .

Tower-like houses can also be found in Switzerland , e.g. B. the tower house of the Altenburg castle .
