About this picture

Ebergötzen is a municipality and the administrative seat of the joint municipality Radolfshausen in the district of Göttingen in southern Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

The place is best known because the draftsman and poet Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908) spent most of his school days here from 1841 to 1846. The mill, which plays a central role for Max and Moritz , belonged to the father of his friend Erich Bachmann.

In addition, the European Bread Museum has been located in Ebergötzen since 2004 .

Geographical location

Ebergötzen is located around 15 km east of Göttingen on the B 27 via Gieboldehausen to Herzberg . The Holzerode, about 5 km away, belongs to Ebergötzen, through which a section of the floodplain (western tributary of the swell ) flows . Wilhelm Busch caught trout with his hands in a rocky stream valley there in 1845.

history

The first written mention of the place can be found in a forged document from Heinrich II. From the year 1013 or 1022 as Euergoteshem . While the place name in the oldest documents ends in "-heim", the ending later changes to " -hausen ", often shortened to "-sen". On maps from the 18th century, a second settlement area south of the floodplain can already be seen opposite the main settlement along Herzberger Strasse; the Radolfshausen office with the former moated castle was separated from the town to the east by green spaces. Later local expansions were made, especially in the 20th century, especially in the west of the Amtshof, between the Amt and the village and northeast of the town center on Papenberg, but also on the edge of the settlement area south of the Aue.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1973 the neighboring community of Holzerode was incorporated.

Coat of arms, flag and seal

Blazon : “The coat of arms of the municipality of Ebergötzen shows two golden (yellow) ears of corn standing fan-shaped on a stalk in green in front in green; behind in red a golden (yellow) one-sided bent wall anchor, below in gold (yellow) an eight-spoke black mill wheel (water mill wheel). "

Justification for the coat of arms: The ears of corn stand for agriculture, the wall anchor is the symbol of the Lords of Plesse , the water mill wheel symbolizes the Wilhelm Busch mill. The wave cut stands for the stream Aue, which flows through the municipality. The colors red and gold are those of the Lords of Plesse; they were supplemented by green (as a symbol for nature and agriculture).

Description of the flag: "The flag has yellow-green stripes with the coat of arms in the middle."

Description of the seal: "The official seal of the municipality contains the coat of arms and the inscription" Gemeinde Ebergötzen, Landkreis Göttingen "."

Attractions

Former Amtshof Radolfshausen

Radolffshausen office building

To the west of Ebergötzen was the place Radolfshausen, which probably became a desert at the turn of the 14th to the 15th century . At the end of the 14th century a document mentions a Vorwerk Radolfshausen, which had been owned by the Lords of Plesse since 1437 . In 1508 they expanded the Vorwerk into a moated castle , the main building of which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The administrative seat of the Radolfshausen Office, which existed until 1859, was an office building that was built in the 18th century and redesigned several times; the former office later served as a forestry office. Numerous former outbuildings such as the prison, the brewery and larger agricultural buildings were demolished after the office was suspended. A massive, well-fortified residential tower from around 1500 with a rectangular floor plan and an extension from the 17th century has been preserved. The high-medieval residential tower is built from quarry stone masonry, has three vaulted floors and ends with a gable roof . In the extension, only the lower floor is solid, the two upper floors are half-timbered with a cantilever.

The site of the former Radolfshausen office now houses the European Bread Museum .

Wilhelm Busch Mill

Wilhelm Busch Mill

The Wilhelm-Busch-Mühle is a museum-like water mill with an overshot water wheel . In addition to the Mittelmühle and the Obermühle, this listed building is the third mill in Ebergötzen as the Niedermühle and Herrenmühle. The two-storey half-timbered building with a gable roof was probably built in the 18th century and restored at the end of the 20th century. The draftsman Wilhelm Busch spent large parts of his youth in the mill after he moved to Ebergötzen at the age of nine and made a lifelong friendship with Erich Bachmann (1832–1907), the miller's son of the same age. The mill was established in 1977 as a tourist attraction for Wilhelm Busch and repaired, including the grinding technology.

Church of St. Cosmas and Damian

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is on Herzberger Straße. Due to its location on a small spur of the slope, it is clearly exposed to the viewer coming from the south. The small plastered hall church with corner blocks, window and door frames made of red sandstone was built in 1772. The broad, brick-hung tower is located above the western front with the main entrance. The churchyard is surrounded by a low sandstone wall. The interior of the church is characterized by baroque furnishings.
