history

Rollshausen is first mentioned on November 9, 1141. Archbishop Markolf of Mainz confirmed in a partially forged document the Northeimer Kloster St. Blasien possessions in a place which is called "Rotholvishusen". During the Thirty Years' War , Rollshausen also suffered badly from the fighting between Duke Christian von Braunschweig and General Tilly . From the latter it is testified that he set up a night camp on the Hellberg. Since the middle of the 14th century Rollshausen was part of the administrative district of the Gieboldehausen office , before it finally belonged to the municipality of Duderstadt from 1885 to 1972 . From January 1, 1973, Rollshausen and Germershausen formed a unified community before it finally became a member of the Gieboldehausen joint community .

Traditional sources of income in the village have always been agriculture , handicrafts and trade. A brick factory was built in 1890 and a cigarette factory in 1901. There was also a milling company for decades . Today several commercial enterprises have their headquarters in Rollshausen.

St. Margareta Church

Catholic Church of St. Margaretha
Choir of the Sankt-Margareta-Kirche in Rollshausen

Between 1901 and 1903, the St. Margareta Church in Rollshausen was built according to the plans of the Hildesheim building councilor Herzig . It is a three-aisled neo - Romanesque basilica and has the dimensions 38.5 m in length and 15.5 m in width. The transept of the church extends over a length of 21 m and has a semicircular apse . The exterior of today's church is characterized by the brick facade, which was walled in the interior and set off with belt - arcade arches , wall pillars and triumphal arch. The furnishings also come from the time it was built and are therefore in the neo-Romanesque style. Among the pieces of equipment are a Sacred Heart and a Margaret statue from 1903 as well as a celebration altar made of shell limestone core stone . Another special feature is the station of the Cross , which dates back to the 16th century . It has a relief on both sides with the crucifixion and the carrying of the cross, has the shape of a medallion and a diameter of approx. 50 cm. Further components of the Stations of the Cross medallion are the numerous figures, the vivid description of the two scenes as well as the special perspective and physiognomy. Since November 1st, 2014 the church belongs to the parish “St. John the Baptist ”based in Seulingen .

Predecessor churches

In 2014, archaeologists from an excavation company removed the church floor due to dry rot infestation before renovation work . Underneath, they discovered the foundations of the previous church from 1639 and of a previously unknown church. The more recent previous building from 1639 was a baroque church . Its construction date is documented by an inscription on an altar stone. This church with a half-timbered tower was torn down for the new church in 1901. Its massive substructure suggested an even earlier church. The archaeologists dated the older church building discovered during the excavation in 2014 as late Romanesque or early Gothic. During the excavation work, the pavement and the foundation of an octagonal defense tower were also exposed.

traffic

Rollshausen is connected to the road network via the federal highway 247 ( Northeim - Duderstadt ), which runs in the immediate vicinity of the town, and via country roads to the federal highway 27 , which leads from Göttingen to Herzberg am Harz .
Rollshausen had a train stop on the Leinefelde – Wulften line . This has now been shut down.
