history

The first known documented mention of the place Wollbrandshausen comes from the year 1105, but like most places in the area the place is probably older. The documentary mention took place at a place owned confirmation that the archbishop of Mainz Ruthard the monastery Katlenburg uttered. This document also states that Count Dietrich von Katlenburg had given the Archbishop of Mainz a hoof at “Walbernhusen”. After the death of Dietrich von Katlenburg his possessions in Wollbrandshausen went to the Count of Northeim , and later again to Heinrich the Lion . At the latest by the middle of the 14th century, the place belonged to the Gieboldehausen office and was sold by the Brunswick dukes to the archbishopric of Mainz in 1342. Since Wollbrandshausen was on the border of the electoral state and the thoroughfare to Göttingen , it was particularly hard hit by the consequences of the war in the 17th and 18th centuries. The village was burned down twice in the Thirty Years 'War , in 1623 and 1626, while in the Seven Years' War in 1761 it was a battleground between Hanoverians and French.

A pilgrimage site was built on the Höherberg in 1855 in the area around the town in honor of the Fourteen Saints . The reason for this was the cholera epidemic that had been rampant in Eichsfeld since 1850 and claimed more than 30 lives in Wollbrandshausen. The “Great Pilgrimage ” always takes place on the second Sunday in July, while the “Small Pilgrimage” falls on the Sunday after June 21st. In addition, on the last Sunday in September there is always a traditional equestrian service in honor of St. Eustachius .

The nucleus of the village is likely to be found in the area of the church. Today's Catholic Church of St. George was only built in 1796 as a classical sandstone building.

Blazon : “In red, St. George on a rearing horse, with his left and right hand thrusting his lance into the open jaws of the dragon. Rider, horse and dragon golden. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms designed by Fritz Reimann from Fuhrbach and approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior on January 20, 1951 is derived from the St. George's relief above the church portal in Wollbrandshausen.

Culture and sights

St. George Church

Classicist Church of St. George

One of the altogether four classical sacred buildings of the Untereichsfeld is the Wollbrandshaus Church of St. Georg, which is a red sandstone building with a polygonal choir closure and a turret-like, pointed tower with copper fittings. Around the outside walls of the church there is an even structure with pilasters , which on the one hand represent vertical plinths and on the other hand horizontal cornices . The west facade forms a two-storey portal structure on which a niche is attached in the higher part, in which there is a relief representation of St. George . The room architecture of the hall, which is spanned by a stitch-capped mirror vault, is determined by antique ornamental motifs such as a tooth cut , pearl rod and palmette frieze . They are attached to the cranked cornices of the pilasters. On the east wall of the choir, parts of frescoes that were once plastered over were exposed. The main altar of the church comes from the Goslar sculptor Jobst Heinrich Lessen the Younger and is dated to the 1st third of the 18th century. The altar used to be in Henneckenrode until it came to Wollbrandshausen in 1862, presumably on the initiative of Cardinal Kopp from Duderstadt . This thesis is supported by the fact that Kopp was a cardinal in Henneckenrode at the time . The side altar shows the martyrdom of St. John of Nepomuk and contrasts with the main altar in terms of style and color. In the upper part of the side altar there are two pictures which show the saint's thrust from the Vltava bridge and the saint lying in the water. Furthermore, in the church there is a late Gothic crescent moon Madonna with child, under whose skirt hem a grim moon face peeks out. Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Laurentius, based in Gieboldehausen .

Pilgrimage Chapel to the Fourteen Holy Helpers

The Höherberg , located about 1.8 kilometers north of Wollbrandshausen, is not the highest mountain in the Untereichsfeld at 242 meters, but its open location with a view on all sides makes it one of the most beautiful vantage points in the entire region, even if the landscape has changed since Isekes Has changed times. Reliable information about the history of the origins of the pilgrimage chapel on the Höherberg is given in the report by the Wollbrandshaus priest August Vocke of August 7, 1855 to the Hildesheim bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin . This can be read in the chronicle The pilgrimage chapel on the Höherberg 1856-2006 published by the parish of Wollbrandshausen. August Vocke's detailed account of the prehistory of the pilgrimage chapel clearly refutes the opinion that has often been expressed that the building can be traced back to a vow made by Vocke that if he was spared cholera, he wanted to build a chapel on the Höherberg. It was consecrated by Bishop Wedekin on June 21, 1856, and expanded from 1901 to 1902.

On May 1st of each year the pilgrimage season opens on the Höherberg with the participation of the St. Joseph Wollbrandshausen men's choir. Other events include the small and large pilgrimages, horse pilgrimages and the light procession for the Feast of the Assumption .

Wollbrandhaus Shrovetide from 1890

A specialty of Wollbrandshausen is the carnival tradition. Carnival is the town's largest event during the year. In contrast to other carnival traditions, there is no prince couple and no prince's guard either. The main actors are the Court of Justice and the Medical Commission. On the Saturday before Rose Monday, the festivities begin with the handmade paper evening, on which various speeches, dances and other presentations are performed. The carnival parade through the village takes place on the following Sunday with the participation of the local clubs. Rose Monday is the real highlight of the event. The day begins with the “Stümpelessen” (hearty breakfast). In the afternoon, the court then symbolically “shaves” the “Piepgössel” (young villagers mostly at the age of 16), who enter adult life through this custom. The young girls are "examined" by the medical commission. For some years now, a price masked ball has been held on the evening of Rose Monday. Tuesday morning the Court of Justice and the Medical Commission with the "Piepgösseln" once again roam the town to collect sausages and eggs. In the evening, the traditional sausage dinner takes place with the villagers, where the sausage donations collected in the morning are tasted. On Wednesday evening, the Wollbrandshaus Carnival ends with a herring meal.

Other regular events

Another highlight of the year is the play by the amateur drama group of the St.Joseph men's choir. For over 100 years, a different play has been staged on Boxing Day each year. At the beginning of January, usually around Epiphany , this idea is repeated.

Other events are the shooting festival, hiking days, club balls and the sports week. Regular events of the local parish are the parades through the town on Corpus Christi and St. Martin's Day .

Natural monuments

The most important natural monument of the village, the Friedensesche, is located at the southern entrance to the village opposite the village community center. This was planted in 1871 and commemorates the end of the Franco-German War in 1870/71. The tree now has a height of 20 meters and a trunk diameter of 1.10 meters. As part of the road body of the district road 117 to Seeburg, on which the tree is directly, it is owned by the district of Göttingen. The ash was officially designated as a natural monument until 2014. Since an assessment by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority showed that the tree was no longer viable due to its age, it was removed from the list of natural monuments.

The only other natural monuments in Wollbrandshausen are two linden trees, which also flank a wayside shrine at the southern entrance to the village.
