Günther Meinhardt
Günther Meinhardt (born January 22, 1925 in Blankenburg am Harz , † September 17, 1999 in Göttingen ) was an everyday and cultural historian with a focus on southern Lower Saxony .
Life
After graduating from high school in Blankenburg am Harz in 1943, he became an officer in the Wehrmacht and suffered a serious war injury in the last days of the war in Italy, as a result of which he lost a leg and an arm and had a speech impediment from a bullet through his face. After the end of the war he studied education at the University of Halle and became a primary school teacher . Due to differences in religious education , he left the GDR and continued his studies at the University of Göttingen , where he was awarded a doctorate in numismatics (modern and medieval history and ethnology as minor subjects) in 1958. phil. (Diss .: The history of coins and money in the Duchy of Prussia, 1569–1701 ). Then he began his work as an independent historian, which shows him to be one of the more distinguished historians through more than forty monographs and over 1,500 newspaper articles. The focus of his work was in southern Lower Saxony, where he wrote a large number of local chronicles, church and club histories and repeatedly dealt with the University of Göttingen. In addition, he dealt with the history of the former German colonies. The WorldCat has 441 works by him. Since 1969 he was a member of the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research .
