Edward Cornelius O'Leary (born August 21, 1920 in Bangor , Maine , United States , † April 2, 2002 ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Portland .

Life

Edward Cornelius O'Leary studied at Holy Cross College in Worcester and at St. Paul's Seminary in Ottawa , where he also obtained a licentiate in theology. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Portland on June 15, 1946 and has served in parish ministry in Portland, Old Orchard, and Brunswick . As a pastor at Portland Cathedral and as Chancellor of the Diocesan Curia, he made services to the diocese. Pope John XXIII appointed him papal house prelate in 1959 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 16, 1970 Titular Bishop of Moglaena and Auxiliary Bishop in Portland. The Bishop of Portland, Peter Leo Gerety , ordained him episcopally on January 25 of the following year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Worcester , Bernard Joseph Flanagan , and Lawrence Preston Joseph Graves , Auxiliary Bishop at Little Rock .

He was named Bishop of Portland on October 16, 1974, and inducted into office on December 18 of the same year. During his tenure, the diocese of Portland experienced a sharp increase in population, with a simultaneous drop in the number of priests. O'Leary reacted to this situation by involving lay people in the diocese administration. He campaigned against pornography and abortion and initiated help for AIDS sufferers.

On September 27, 1988, John Paul II accepted his early resignation on health grounds.
