Lawrence Preston Joseph Graves

Lawrence Preston Joseph Graves (born May 4, 1916 in Texarkana , Arkansas , † January 15, 1994 ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Graves was bishop of the diocese of Alexandria .

Life

Lawrence Graves, born in Texarkana, attended St. John Home Mission Seminary in Little Rock . He then went to Rome , where he studied at the Pontifical North America College , and later at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC for the priesthood . On June 11, 1942, Graves received the sacrament of ordination .

Graves was born on February 24, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Little Rock and titular bishop of Vina . He received his episcopal ordination on April 25, 1969, the Bishop of Little Rock Albert Lewis Fletcher ; Co- consecrators were Lawrence Michael De Falco , Bishop of Amarillo , and Warren Louis Boudreaux , Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Lafayette , Louisiana.

After the resignation of Bishop Charles Pasquale Greco on May 10, 1973, Graves, also by Paul VI., Was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria. During his tenure, the diocese was renamed the Alexandria-Shreveport diocese in 1976 . Graves was diocesan bishop for nine years. On July 20, 1982, Pope John Paul II allowed him to resign.

He died in January 1994, at the age of 77.
