William Benedict Friend (born October 22, 1931 in Miami , Florida , † April 2, 2015 in Coral Springs , Florida) was Bishop of Shreveport .

Life

William Benedict Friend was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham on May 7, 1959 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Pomaria and auxiliary bishop in Alexandria-Shreveport on August 31, 1979 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of New Orleans , Philip Hannan , on October 30 of the same year; Co- consecrators were John Lawrence May , Bishop of Mobile , and Lawrence Preston Joseph Graves , Bishop of Alexandria-Shreveport.

He was named Bishop of Alexandria-Shreveport on November 17, 1982, and was appointed to the office on January 11, 1983. On June 16, 1986, with the division of his diocese by John Paul II, he was appointed Bishop of Shreveport and was introduced to the office on July 30 of the same year. On December 20, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
