Coral Springs is a city in Broward County in the US state of Florida with 121,096 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Coral Springs is located approximately 15 km northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 45 km north of Miami . Surrounding communities are Parkland , Coconut Creek , Margate , North Lauderdale, and Tamarac . To the west, the city borders the Everglades .

history

Before the city was founded in 1963, what is now the metropolitan area consisted of extensive, swampy wilderness in western Broward County. The land was gradually drained by its owner Henry "Bud" Lyons and used for growing beans. After his death, his children began to farm cattle and continued the drainage, which was supported by an extensive canal system in southern Florida.

After World War II , southern Florida experienced a huge real estate boom . In the late 1950s, land in eastern Broward County around Fort Lauderdale became scarce. Real estate companies looked for additional developable land further west. Although the area of what is now Coral Spring was still quite swampy, it fit in perfectly with real estate agent James Hunt's vision of a city planned on the drawing board. His company Coral Ridge Properties bought 16 km² of land for $ 1 million and built three wooden huts there, into which four employees moved. This meant that the requirements in the state of Florida were met to be officially registered as a municipality. Registration took place on July 10, 1963.

In 1964 a project plan was developed for a city with over 50,000 inhabitants, which should consist of small neighborhoods throughout the city. In July of that year, 536 plots of land in the planned test-tube city were sold at a sales event. At the same time, the construction of the infrastructure and public buildings began. In a further sales event in early 1965, another 1,000 properties were sold. Hunts Coral Ridge Properties provided the city government. The city manager appointed by the company kept his position until 1974. In July 1965, the first 'real' residents came to Coral Springs. With the police chief and his assistant, the first city employees began their service that same month.

Two years later the city had a few hundred inhabitants, according to official figures there were around 1500 by 1970. There were now schools and the Coral Springs volunteer fire department . In the 1970s the city grew at a tremendous pace. In 1980 already 37,500 people lived here, another 5 years later the 50,000 mark was exceeded. Total assets in Coral Springs passed the $ 1 billion mark in 1983 . The growth continued: by 1990 the population grew to 82,000. In 2000 there were 116,000 with total assets of over $ 4.7 billion.
