Publix is a US company based in Lakeland , Florida .

The trading company employs over 159,500 people at 1,071 business locations (as of June 30, 2013). The shopping centers are located in the US states of Florida (754 stores), Georgia (180), South Carolina (48), Tennessee (35) and Alabama (54).

Company founder George W. Jenkins opened the first Publix store in 1930 in Winter Haven , Florida. In 1934, his store had sales of $ 120,000. In 1935 he opened a second grocery store called the Economy Food Store in Winter Haven. Jenkins' company survived the difficult economic times of World War II and in 1945 acquired 19 supermarkets from the All American chain .

In 1951, Jenkins moved its headquarters to Lakeland, Florida. In 1956, the company topped annual sales of $ 50 million for the first time and posted a profit of $ 1 million. In 1957, the donut shops in the supermarkets were converted into bakery sales outlets. In 1959 Publix was the most important shopping market in central Florida and expanded into southern Florida. In 1963 the first store opened in Miami and in 1974 the first stores opened in Jacksonville , Florida. In 1982 Presto! ATMs set up.

The first supermarket outside the state of Florida opened in Savannah , Georgia in 1991, with more to follow in the years to come. From 1993 the first stores opened in the state of South Carolina, from 1996 in Alabama and from 2002 in Tennessee.
