history

Macy's was founded on October 28, 1858 in New York City at the corner of 6th and 14th. Street founded as RH Macy & Company . Founder was former whaler Rowland Hussey Macy . As a company logo, he chose a red star, which he wore as a tattoo from his seafaring days. Macy's later moved to 18th Street and Broadway , which was one of the most expensive shopping streets of the 19th century.

By the time Macy died in 1877, his originally small shop had grown to include eleven buildings. After his death, the shop continued to expand under the brothers Nathan and Isidor Straus . The brothers had run the china and glassware department under Macy. After moving, the main building has been on Herald Square since 1902 . Isidor Straus and his wife died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 .

Between 1920 and 1930, Macy's began opening stores in other cities. Independently of this, the company Federated Department Stores (Federated or FDS for short) was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1929 as a holding company for the sub-companies Abraham & Straus , F&R Lazarus & Company and William Filene's Sons . In 1930 Bloomingdale’s was added. In 1945, FDS relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. Further takeovers followed in the next few decades. In 1990, Federated went bankrupt after a hostile takeover of a competitor. After conversion into a stock corporation, the company was able to continue in 1992 and took over RH Macy & Co. in December 1994, which in turn had gone bankrupt in 1992.

In 2003, Federated Department Stores renamed all of its properties back to Macy's with the exception of Bloomingdale's. In 2005 the May Department Stores were taken over, creating the largest department store chain in the USA. In June 2007 the holding in was Macy's, Inc. changed its name. Currently (as of early 2008) this holding company operates more than 810 department stores under the Macy's brand and 40 houses under the Bloomingdale's brand. The company is represented in 45 states, the District of Columbia , Guam and Puerto Rico . Since the beginning of the 21st century, Macy's has had to give up several parts of the company and undertake cost-saving measures, and in the process also cut several thousand jobs. From September 8, 2017, the ex-Ebay manager Hal Lawson will take over the office of president at Macy's.
