Bloomingdale’s (proper spelling: bloomingdale’s) is an American department store chain in the upper segment with its headquarters in New York City . In 2011, the department store chain operated a total of 41 stores within the USA and is a subsidiary of Macy's, Inc.

history

The company was founded around 1860 by the brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale on New York's Lower East Side in Manhattan .

The brothers initially imported clothes, fabrics and fashion items from Europe in order to sell them in street vendors and in improvised "stores" in up-and-coming New York at the turn of the century . In 1872 the brothers opened their first own general store Bloomingdale Bros. (Bloomingdale Brothers) on New York's East Side.

In 1886 the thriving company moved to New York's Lexington Avenue . The business expanded continuously and owned an entire building complex as early as 1900. Clever marketing , especially through the commercial skills of Lyman Bloomingdale, allowed the company to prosper. In 1930, the Bloomingdale brothers joined the Federated Department Stores , which eventually became Macy's Inc. in 2007 , after Federated bought the Macy's department store chain in 1994.

In the 1940s, Bloomingdale’s put more emphasis on fashion shows, set accents and trends and created, among other things, the title “Woman of the Year” , a lifestyle nomination that in the following years became one of the most coveted awards among young models from New York should be.

Bloomingdale’s has always been characterized by progressive ideas, unusual shop window decorations and advertising and in the 1960s was in stiff competition with other exclusive department stores on New York’s Fifth Avenue such as Bonwitt Teller’s. Renowned graphic designers , including Andy Warhol and Milton Glaser , caused a sensation with their innovative designs for department stores and numerous design prizes went to the designers and fashion designers of Bloomingdale's.

Bloomingdale’s is one of the most important New York department stores and department store institutions, comparable to the traditional Harrods company in London . The house employs numerous well-known designers (including Ralph Lauren ) for its own collections . A New York Times article from the 1960s said: "A visit to New York would be pointless without Bloomingdale’s and Tiffany’s ." Bloomingdale’s is the only department store brand name owned by Federated Department Stores (2007: Macy’s, Inc.) in 2006 retained, while all other brand names of department stores that had been bought up over the years (such as Famous-Barr, Filene's, Foley's, Hecht's, The Jones Store, Marshall Field 's, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May and others), partly under protest of the population, were renamed Macy's and thus disappeared from the market.

Bloomingdale’s headquarters are still at the headquarters in New York at the corner of 59th and Lexington Avenue ; the department store chain has branches in the states of California , Florida , Georgia , Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , Minnesota , Nevada , New Jersey , New York , Pennsylvania and Virginia and also operates a store under license to the Al Tayer Group from the UAE the Dubai Mall in Dubai . The 41 stores in the USA also include some bloomingdales's HOME stores for interior design and furniture as well as four Bloomingdale's outlets . By the end of 2012, the number of Bloomingdale's stores in the US is expected to drop to 38 and the number of Bloomingdale's outlets to grow to 12.

Bloomingdale's is also known for its original shopping bags. These are brown paper bags, such as those used in the USA, for example, in supermarkets, but with handles and with three-line dark brown text "medium brown bag" (or little or big , depending on the size of the paper bag) translates as "medium-sized brown bag". The Bloomingdale's logo is only shown on the side fold of the bags. Despite or perhaps because of the print, Bloomingdale's describes its shopping bags as the most famous shopping bags in the world. Bloomingdale's also consciously promotes the cult through numerous large photos in the department stores themselves or special editions made of plastic as handbags.
