Marshall Field
Marshall Field (born August 18, 1834 near Conway , † January 16, 1906 in New York City ) was an American entrepreneur who founded the department store chain Marshall Field and Company .
Marshall Field was born on a farm near Conway, Massachusetts in 1834. In 1856 he moved to Chicago, where he worked his way up to partner in the retail company Cooley, Wadsworth, and Company . After taking over the business, he founded Field, Palmer and Leiter in 1865 , which would become Marshall Field and Company in 1881 .
In 1893 he gave a million dollars to build the Columbian Museum at the Chicago World's Fair . After his death in 1906, he left a $ 8 million foundation for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, which would later be named after him .
Marshall Field & Co. in Chicago was the largest department store in the world in the 1910s.
