history

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Native Americans, the Indians from the Abaniki tribe and mainly pirates who were waiting for an opportunity to ambush a Spanish galleon lived here . Back then, many ships were laden with gold and silver when they started their journey home. Often the ships were led by false flares against the cliffs, where the ships stranded and were therefore easy prey. This was made easier by the poor navigation aids that the ships had on board. From time to time it also happened that a hurricane simply washed the ships ashore. Many a family laid the foundation for their later wealth during this time.

At the end of the 19th century, some sick and elderly people came to this area, who promised healing and relief from the bubbling springs and regular baths in the swamps, according to Indian legends. The best known were the railroad entrepreneur Henry Flagler and the architect Addison Minzer . The latter designed much of the homes in North Lauderdale in his style, and those he hadn't designed were modeled on his style. In 1925 he designed and built the Bocas Cloisters Hotel , which is still part of a large holiday complex today. Minzner's motto was: We need a few big snobs and the little ones will follow . Future proved that he was right. The first boom began.

In 1920 the area around what is now Noth Lauderdale with its magnificent hotels and beautiful condominiums was still called Palmetto Scrub and was marshland. Apart from a few sailors and anglers, no one got lost on the beach. In 1956, the investor bought Arthur Davis Vinnung the Bocas Cloisters Hotel for 22.5 million USD . That was 17 million more than the US state had spent on the entire area of Florida formerly occupied by Spain . The construction and tourist boom could not be stopped.

Even today, North Lauderdale is a city shaped by tourism and winter vacationers.
