Oakland Park is a city in Broward County in the US state of Florida with 41,363 inhabitants (as of 2010). The geographic coordinates are: 26.17 ° North, 80.15 ° West. The urban area has a size of 17.9 km². Oakland Park got its name from the first settlers based on the massive oak trees that stood along the Middle River .

Oakland Park is about 25 km north of Miami . Adjacent communities are Tamarac , Lauderdale Lakes , Fort Lauderdale, and Wilton Manors .

history

The first permanent residents to settle here were the Whidby family, who moved from Georgia to Florida in 1901 . By 1918, other families, mostly farmers, came to settle here. In 1923 the land was divided into parcels. On this occasion a huge barbecue was celebrated , probably the largest of its time. This barbecue is still mentioned in the history books today. In 1925 a group of European investors, mainly nobles, initiated by the Earl and Countess of Lauderdale, tried to found the city "Floranada" as a vacation paradise. However, on September 18, 1926, these efforts were thwarted by a hurricane.
On June 10, 1929, after the small town had been rebuilt, Oakland Park was recognized and registered as a town. The 1932 census showed a population of 562 citizens, in 1970 there were already 16,261 inhabitants. From 1941 there was a volunteer fire brigade , which was replaced by a professional fire brigade in 1958 .

Oakland Park currently has 27 different churches from 10 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 5 churches. There are also 7 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 41,363 inhabitants were distributed over 20,076 households. The population density was 2537.6 inh / km². 62.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 25.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.0% as Asian Americans . 6.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.5% to several ethnic groups. 25.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 27.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 18.6% of all households. 51.0% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.35 people and the average family size was 3.10 people.

22.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 33.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 14.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 53.5% of the population were male and 46.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,470, with 15.0% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 66.52% of the population, 18.16% spoke Spanish and 15.32% had another mother tongue.

The Mai-Kai Restaurant and Oakland Park Elementary School are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

In Oakland Park there is the "Northeast High School" with around 2200 students enrolled. Other higher education institutions can be reached within 30 minutes in the area. In Fort Lauderdale, 5 km away, there are: the "Keizer College" (about 2800 students), the "Broward Community College" (about 12,500 students), the "Art Institute" (about 2500 students), the "Nova Southeastern University" “(About 12,500 students). The "Barry University" (about 5700 students) and the "Miami-Dade Community College" with about 25,300 students are located in Miami.

Libraries

There is a public library, the “Oakland Park Library” with around 45,000 books and an increasing number of audio and video material. Selecting, viewing the availability list and ordering can now be done online.

Parks and sports facilities

There is a wide range of different city parks as well as several sporting facilities, as well as playgrounds and opportunities for camping. Sports facilities include T-ball, pitch ball, softball, baseball, football, basketball, soccer, tennis and swimming.

There is no industry worth mentioning. The main branches of employment are: education, health and social affairs: (13.6%), arts, entertainment, restaurants (12.7%), trade / retail: (12.1%), construction: (10.2%).

traffic

Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 and Florida State Roads 811 , 816 , 845 and 870 run through the city . The nearest domestic airport is Pompano Beach Airpark and the nearest international airport is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport .

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 422 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three murders, 17 rapes, 133 robberies, 147 assaults, 611 break-ins, 1,387 thefts, 123 car thefts and two arson attacks.
