Charles Pasquale Greco

Charles Pasquale Greco (born October 29, 1894 in Rodney , Mississippi , † January 20, 1987 in Alexandria , Louisiana ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Greco was bishop of the diocese of Alexandria .

Life

Born in a small town on the border with the US state of Louisiana, Greco grew up as the son of Frank and Carmela Greco in Natchez . He attended Saint Joseph Seminary College in Covington , Louisiana. He then went to Europe , where he was a student at the American College of the Immaculate Conception in Leuven , Belgium , and later at the University of Friborg in Switzerland .

On July 25, 1918, Greco received the sacrament of ordination from Archbishop John William Shaw . He then became vicar general in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and chaplain at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in New Orleans . In 2005, this church was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and was not rebuilt afterwards.

Pope Pius XII appointed Greco on January 15, 1946 the 6th Bishop of Alexandria. The episcopal ordination took place on February 25, 1946 , carried out by Archbishop Joseph Rummel . Co-consecrators were the bishops Richard Oliver Gerow and Thomas Joseph Toolen .

Greco was a bishop for 27 years. During this time he founded 33 parishes, built over 120 churches and places of worship, 100 monasteries and 7 old people's homes. He also founded two schools, including one for young people with special needs in Shreveport . Between 1962 and 1965 it took place in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Greco was also a member of the Association of the Knights of Columbus , whose chairman ( Supreme Chaplain ) he was from 1961 until his death.

On May 10, 1973 he submitted to Pope Paul VI. his resignation request, which was also granted. He was then able to enjoy a 14-year retirement; he died in January 1987, at the age of 92.
