Lichtenau Castle

The castle Lichtenau is located in the center of Lichtenau , next to the Protestant church. It was built as a tower castle and for many years served as the official building of the duchy of Paderborn . It has a height of 33 meters.

history

The castle, which is atypical for the region, was built in the early 14th century, probably at the same time as the first mention of the city of Lichtenau. It served the population as a fortress during a period of great unrest and feuds . The castle housed a castle cellar with barrel vaults, a knight's hall on the first floor, a granary , as well as cattle stables and rooms for the storage of defensive weapons. In 1399 the miners Werner and Ludolf de Marschalk gave the Burglehn zu Lichtenau to Friedrich von Driburg.

With the castle, however, it also became a sovereign base for the Paderborn prince-bishop and was increasingly used as an office building. In 1492, Simon III pledged the castle for a century to the Lords of Westphalia . Prince-Bishop Dietrich Adolf (1650–1661) redeemed the pledge. The castle was the seat of the Drost of the Lichtenau office . The noble Drost was no longer resident in the castle in the late period of the prince-bishopric. Rather, a bourgeois public servant took care of the state tax revenue and organized the police and judiciary.
