The Oldenburg near Marienmünster is the former ancestral seat of the Counts in Wetigau , who named themselves Counts of Schwalenberg after the place of this castle from 1127 onwards . The castle is located in the area of the present-day town of Marienmünster, Münsterbrock district, in East Westphalia-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The castle complex was built around 1100. In 1128, near the castle, Count Widekind I von Schwalenberg and his wife Lutrud von Itter founded the Marienmünster Benedictine monastery only a few hundred meters away . Around 1230 the counts founded a new seat, Schwalenberg Castle . The name Oldenburg came about when Count Volkwin IV. Von Schwalenberg moved into his new headquarters in Schwalenberg; it means old castle .
In 1350 the county was sold by the last Schwalenbergers to the Bishop of Paderborn and the noblemen of the Lippe . The residential tower still preserved and inhabited today was built between 1373 and 1376. The tower, which had stood empty for a long time, was restored and is now privately owned.
