Elvershausen is a district of Katlenburg-Lindau in the Northeim district in southern Lower Saxony. With around 700 inhabitants, the place extends over an area of 7.6 km².

history

In 1082 "Alwardeshusen" was first mentioned in a document. The name is derived from Alphard (Elfhard), a Germanic patron saint for springs, streams and rivers. Since each of Elvershausen's valleys was created by washing and most of them are still flowed through by streams, the name is appropriate. In the middle of the village there was a swamp area, the Pump , in which there are still some wet meadows today.

The founding of Elvershausen probably went hand in hand with the Christianization of the region: after Charlemagne had subjugated the Saxon tribal princes - mostly by force - after 800 AD, they ensured that their subjects also converted to the new faith.

It is assumed that the Elvershausen Castle was built on the Hopfenberg at this time, and that the people who settled deeper in the woods, such as B. Hoinhagen, to go under the protection of the Elvershausen castle lords. There is certainly evidence of a knight from Elvershausen in 1270, who at that time lived in a castle above the village. The lords of the time were a branch of the lords of Susa, who died out in 1542. The first church building will probably have been built at the same time. In the 16th century there is also evidence of ownership of the princes of Grubenhagen . In a document dated August 24, 1518, Duke Philip I testifies that he owns goods both in and in the Feldmark zu Elvershausen and henceforth assigns them to his relative, Albrechte Herthogen, as a fief . Another mention of Philip's goods follows almost eight years later. On February 18, 1526 Philipp promised that the Vorwerk and Gut zu Elvershausen, in the event of his death and that of his wife, would be transferred to the Lords of Oldershausen as an inheritance.

In modern times, Elvershausen and the villages of Denkershausen , Edesheim , Hohnstedt , Langenholtensen and Vogelbeck belonged to the Brunstein department .

Elvershausen got its special importance due to its location in the middle of extensive forest areas on the one hand and the powerfully flowing rhume after the confluence of the Oder and Söse on the other. In the 18th century there were several raft masters in Elvershausen who rafted timber on the Rhume and Leine to Hanover . Others operated an important timber trade here, and the carpentry trade also played a major role. In 1910 a power generation plant, which is still important today, was built on the Rhume near Unterdorf, which is powered by an artificial side channel of the Rhume, the Mühlengraben. The system also includes a weir system on the south-eastern outskirts through which part of the river water is diverted into the canal. At the confluence of the Mühlengraben in the Rhume on the southwestern outskirts there is a flood warning level of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN).

On March 1, 1974 Elvershausen was incorporated into the new municipality of Katlenburg-Lindau.
