history

Origin of name

The name comes from Holzhausen, a place name that occurs quite often in Germany. In Eastphalian pronounced as Holthusen it became Holtensen. To distinguish it from the places of the same name in this region, Holtensen (Einbeck) and Holtensen (Göttingen) , the name Langenholtensen, which refers to the elongated shape of the place, became popular in the 20th century.

Local history

The first documentary mention dates back to 1141. The nearby Northeim was granted city rights in 1252 . This resulted in a rural exodus from the surrounding villages in the following centuries, causing some of them to fall into desolation ( Medenheim , Sultheim, Sonderhagen). Some families also moved from Langenholtensen (at least 25 people can be traced back to the period between 1338 and 1542) and settled in Holzhäuserstraße, which is named after them.

St. Martini Church

During the Thirty Years War , Northeim was besieged by imperial troops in 1626/27. Some of the soldiers who left a devastated village behind were quartered in Langenholtensen. Five out of six Vollmeierhöfe were destroyed. The church, which was also destroyed, was only rebuilt in 1689. The tower has been preserved, the nave was demolished in 1877/78 due to disrepair and fire and renewed in the Gothic style. In 2008 the church, whose parish belongs to the parish of Leine-Solling , was renovated again.

On March 1, 1974, Langenholtensen was incorporated into the district town of Northeim.

The Brunstein settlement also belongs to Langenholtensen. It is located near the former Brunstein Castle .
