geography

Geographical location

Sudheim is located in southern Lower Saxony in the middle of the Weser-Leine mountainous region . The village is located two kilometers south of the district town of Northeim and 15 kilometers north of the university town of Göttingen .

The Leine river runs along the western edge of Sudheim, and the Northeimer Wald Wieter extends not far to the east . The village is located in the middle of agricultural areas that are mainly cultivated by the local farmers.

Due to the steady expansion of the southern commercial areas and the associated conversion of the agricultural areas into mainly car dealerships, the district town of Northeim is approaching the town towards the south.

history

Location portrait

The first written mention of Sudheim is dated around the year 800. The village is one of the oldest settlements in the Leinetal . In 1335 a lord von Hardenberg bought a feudal farm in Sudheim from Duke Otto von Braunschweig . 43 years later, Duke Otto Hildebrand and Jan von Hardenberg enfeoffed the village and also transferred neck jurisdiction and bailiwick to them. The place was characterized by many noble farms and monastery estates, whereby the noblemen von Plesse , von Everstein , von Boventen and von Uslar owned goods in Sudheim. The Bishop of Hildesheim , the Amelungsborn Monastery , the Blasiusstift zu Northeim and the Kalandsbrüder of the chair at Hohnstedt also appeared as other owners . Even today, the Hardenbergers still own an immense part of the Feldmark Sudheims, while the other owners ceded their land to the Hardenbergers. In order to be able to manage their property better, they built a new Vorwerk , the Karlshof, on the Landstrasse in front of Sudheim in 1877 . The place, which still formed a parish village at the beginning and in the middle of the 19th century, belonged to the branch church of Bühle at the end of the same century .

Sudheim lost the character of a pure farming village early on, as the people heralded the commuting era due to the good traffic conditions and the proximity to Northeim . After the Second World War, the Mälich shoe factory began building its factory on the western edge of Sudheim in 1946. As a result, commuting not only from, but also to Sudheim. The shoe factory was the most important employer in town until the 1970s, when production was stopped.

On March 1, 1974 Sudheim was incorporated into the district town of Northeim.

Buildings

St. Nicolai

Ev. St. Nicolai Church

The St. Nicolai Church in Sudheim, with its tower that can be seen from afar, is located on a hill in the middle of the village and defines the landscape of the Leinetal. In 1856 the previous baroque church and parts of the village fell victim to a fire.

The new church and steeple were inaugurated in 1862. The former mantle walls form the basis of the new church, the medieval west tower was increased. The tower heightening differs from other churches in the region with its slate-covered top, which is set back from the massive substructure emphasized by corner pilasters and corner turrets with pinnacles. The draft for the reconstruction of the church was drafted in 1857 by the Hanover consistorial architect Friedrich August Ludwig Hellner ,

The organ was created in 1864 by master organ builder Philipp Furtwängler . When it was renovated in 1997, it was largely restored to its original state.

At the same time as the church, the school and sexton house, which is right next to the church, was built. Today the half-timbered building serves as a community hall.

additional

The Sudheim kindergarten is located next to the church. In addition, the village has its own traditional school . The town's largest children's playgrounds are also located here.

The village has had a heated swimming pool for decades , which was officially inaugurated on June 11, 1939. The inauguration ceremony in 1939 included District Administrator von Schulenburg, Sports Department Head Sieweke, District Manager Walter Steineck and Mayor Wilhelm Bethe (1886–1941), who created a modern leisure facility from the former water pool. In 1963 and 1964 the first expansion phase began with the renewal of the basin. The second expansion stage, in which the outdoor pool received a heating and circulation system, took place in 1973 and 1974. In the summer of 2000, the Sudheim outdoor pool was modernized again and now offers guests two pools, six diving blocks and an oversized chess field, even a beach volleyball field.

A multi-purpose hall near the sports field offers enough space for various types of sport, festive events (large hall) and family celebrations (multi-purpose room). The hall is rented by the local representative.

Sports

Three tennis courts, a sports field with a soccer field, half a cinder track, two grandstands and six floodlight masts , as well as a sports and multi-purpose hall form the basis for an extensive range of sports in the village. The Turn- und Sportverein (TSV) Sudheim offers numerous sports such as football, tennis, volleyball and senior gymnastics.

Parks and nature

Sudheim is on the edge of the Northeimer Wald Wieter and offers residents and visitors alike a lot of nature with seemingly endless fields, forest and hiking trails. A large number of wooden benches around Sudheim, donated by the local council , offer hikers the opportunity to rest on their way in the Sudheim area.

Sudheim also has a small nature park called “Bühler Teich”.

Regular events

The Sudheimer grill and Easter fire place

In Sudheim there are a large number of traditional events on the annual schedule . Among other things, the village festival at the church, the shooting festival , the sports week of the gymnastics and sports club and the Oktoberfest are very popular.

A special highlight is the annual Easter bonfire on the Sudheim Easter fire place on the edge of the Wieter forest. It is one of the most popular and largest fires for the annual Easter festival among the towns of Northeim . Before the flames blaze on Easter Sunday, the young people from Sudheim take on the night watch during the traditional Easter bonfire tents the days before. The protection of the Easter fire goes back to the old tradition of young people to light the Easter fire in the neighboring village of Bühle , which is much smaller with 530 inhabitants, before Easter Sunday.

For several years now, the people of Sudheim have also been holding their own Christmas market , which takes place on the sports grounds.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

The number of farms in Sudheim is also constantly falling. When the savings and loan fund was founded in 1900 , 32 of the 37 founding members were farmers . Today there are only a few full-time and part-time agricultural businesses in Sudheim.

The Sudheim primary school

education

The education of the youth begins in the Sudheimer Kindergarten, which can be found right next to the church. The nursery school is run by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Sudheim school building is used by the Sudheim elementary school and the Catholic Cardinal Bertram School. From mid-2012, both schools are to be merged under the name Cardinal-Bertram-Schule and give themselves a Catholic profile.

traffic

The city center can be reached every hour with the Northeim city bus operated by Weihrauch Uhlendorff GmbH. In addition, a large number of school buses and buses from Regionalbus Braunschweig GmbH (RBB for short) drive to the village of Sudheim. The through traffic in the village was noticeably reduced by the construction of a bypass road.

Others

Sudheim storm disaster

On April 25, 1994 there was a flood of the century in Sudheim and the neighboring town of Bühle. Within three hours, 70 liters of precipitation per square meter were measured in Sudheim, which could not be absorbed by the ground. In the early evening hours, 50 centimeter high water and mud avalanches poured into the village from the fields above. Countless cellars and garages were flooded within minutes. Dozens of fire brigades in the area as well as the THW were in action in Sudheim and Bühle to empty cellars and secure buildings in danger of collapsing. Children had to be evacuated from the flooded multi-purpose hall, the pool of the outdoor pool was filled meters high with mud.
