A group of associations that represent the interests of climbers and nature sports enthusiasts in their area of responsibility is referred to as the climbing interest group ( IG climbing for short ) . They are committed to nature-friendly climbing in the regions, defend themselves against what they believe to be unfounded rock closures and ensure safe hook material on the climbing rocks . In Germany there are currently 18 regional IGs that are members of the Federal Association for Climbing. IGs also exist in Switzerland.

history

In 1989 the popular Röthelfels near Morschreuth in Franconian Switzerland was closed because it was a possible breeding ground for peregrine falcons. The climbers affected started negotiations and were able to get the Röthelfels open again. In order not to be surprised by such climbing bans in the future, the climbers founded Germany's first climbing group in November 1989 with IG Klettern Frankenjura (today IG Klettern Frankenjura, Fichtelgebirge and Bayerischer Wald eV).

While the conflict between nature conservation and climbing in Franconia was regulated from now on, the situation in Baden-Württemberg came to a head when conservationists sought to achieve a state that was largely free of climbing. Four more IGs were founded in Baden-Württemberg by 1991, and one IG was founded in the Harz , in the Münsterland and on the Ith in northern Germany.

In order to take control of the fate of climbing in Germany on a nationwide level, the Federal Association of IG Climbing was founded on June 29, 1991, which acts as the umbrella organization of its member clubs. The first speakers were Friedwart Lender and Hans-Markus Urban.

In 1992, the Federal Association of IG Climbing provided the seventh member to found the Sport & Nature Board of Trustees - an amalgamation of the German nature sports associations. The then still quite young federal association IG Climbing was the "tip on the scales" - without it the seven members necessary to found an association would not have been available.

In the following years the climbers founded further IGs all over Germany.

On July 8, 2002, the IG Climbing and Bergsport Allgäu eV was founded as the southernmost offspring of the IG Climbing, whose area of responsibility also includes some rocks in Vorarlberg and Tyrol. One of the most popular climbing areas on the Grünten should be closed as a "compensatory measure" for the planned expansion of a ski area. A little later - after negotiations with the district office and other interest groups - the full lockdown was off the table.

In the same year, the IG Climbing Frankenjura received the environmental award of the Bavarian State Foundation at the suggestion of the government of Upper Franconia .

In July 2005 the IG climbing filed a judicial review against the blocking of the Konrad Fels near Villmar a an der Lahn with the Administrative Court of Kassel.

The IG Climbing Saar-Hunsrück was founded in 2008 after the threat of extensive rock closures. The newly founded IG was soon able to ensure that climbing on the "Ferl" was still permitted.

activities

The activities of the regional IGs cover a broad spectrum, which are intended to ensure that climbing is environmentally friendly. For this purpose, so-called climbing concepts are developed.

In some regions rocks are zoned into areas that can be climbed and accessed (Zone 3), into areas that cannot be changed but climbing is allowed (Zone 2) and into areas where climbing is prohibited (Zone 1). However, some regions have different concepts that are supposed to have the same effect as zoning. In addition, further, differentiated regulations are being developed that are adapted to the conditions on the respective rock. For example, there are temporary closures that apply to the breeding of rare birds. In the case of endangered plants on the rock heads, bans on rock headings can be decided. The IGs were able to prevent publication in climbing guides on some rocks. The regulations are mostly of a voluntary nature, which are usually very well adhered to. Depending on the region, the regulations can also have an official character in cooperation with the authorities.

In addition, the IGs often take care of secure hook material in the rocks. The Federal Association of IG Climbing organizes the purchase of high quality material in cooperation with some manufacturers and supports the regional IGs financially if necessary. The IGs on site have the necessary know-how as to which hooks on their type of rock provide the most reliable hold. Old, unsafe hooks are replaced with new ones. IG climbing regularly conducts courses for placing bolts through.

Many IGs give climbing courses and train their own "specialist instructors". IG Klettern München und Südbayern operates the climbing hall “Heavens Gate” at the Ostbahnhof in Munich , which offers routes with a height of 30 meters. In addition to climbing, some IGs also take care of other nature sports. IG Climbing and Bergsport Allgäu e. V., for example, in the area of nature-friendly ski touring .

The Federal Association of Climbing IG also represents the interests of climbers in the DAV Climbing and Nature Conservation Commission and in the Sports and Nature Board of Trustees.

IG climbing and the DAV

At the founding meeting of IG Klettern Frankenjura on November 4, 1989, it was discussed whether the club should be founded as a DAV section or not. When it turned out that the DAV had been informed about the closure of the Röthelfelsens, but had not expressed any objections, it was decided to set up an independent representation of the interests of the climbers. However, there is now mostly a friendly relationship between the IGs and the DAV, which goes hand in hand with cooperation on many projects. In some points, however, there are clear differences, for example the DAV has come under heavy criticism from the IG for the implementation of its controversial project “ environmentally friendly ski mountaineering ”.

Board

The Federal Association of Climbing is currently in charge of: 1st speaker: Friedwart Lender, 2nd speaker: Jürgen Kollert, 3rd speaker: Gerald Krug
